Explaining "Not Like Us" To White People part 1

The first lines of the song are deeply coded

It has come to my attention that “Not Like Us” has tons of new fans who may love the song but may not really know what’s going on. I went to the Black People’s Meeting and asked if I can have a moment to deconstruct the song for wypipo so more people can understand Kendrick’s genius. They said yes. When I was at Columbia in graduate school for creative writing we did lots of close readings where the professor would walk through the writer’s choices word by word and explain what he or she is really saying. I’m going to walk you through the beginning of “Not Like Us” so you can better understand the song and this man’s genius.
