Is Ryan Coogler A Great Filmmaker?

Is Ryan Coogler a great filmmaker? Last night I asked two Black film aficionados that and they both paused a long time before finally saying yes. Why could they not say yes rapidly like they would if I had said Jordan Peele or Barry Jenkins? Coogler is the unquestionably a commercially successful director who has real artistic ambition. He’s a filmmaker who clearly loves Black people and uses his films to critique American racism and white supremacy. It’s almost like his camera is intended to be standing up for Black people.
