The Battle was won the moment “Not Like Us” dropped but it feels like it still hasn’t ended. Kendrick’s on an endless national victory lap and Drake’s in an endless spin out. But, wait a minute, we’re in the midst of this long, wild hiphop odyssey, and I lived through it all but do we really, really understand why it all started?
When I say “it” I mean The Battle but I don’t just mean Kendrick v. Drake. I mean the whole 20 v. 1 monstrosity that this thing became as multiple people who were once Drake’s friends popped up on Team Kendrick—guys like Future and Metro Boomin and A$AP Rocky and Kanye and Rick Ross and The Weeknd and more. People tried to call it a civil war but it wasn’t. There was a massive Team Kendrick. There was no Team Drake. He had his fans but that’s not what we’re talking about—did any artists or producers rally to Drake’s side and stand with him? Some might say 50 Cent did kindof but that’s trolling. Metro, Rocky, Ye, and Rozay all made songs dissing Drake and supporting Kenny. No one made a song supporting Drake. That’s wild.
Why is it so many hiphop elites who know Drake and worked with him, are now so deeply angry with him? Why is it none of the hiphop elites were willing to stand up for him when he was down? I think we can get down to an answer…
