I don’t understand how the word “apartheid” is used when it comes to ethnicity but can’t be used for gender. Why should we accept gender apartheid ! Why do we ignore Islams betrayal of women. I’ll pay attention to Coates when he speaks about the same issue for women

The issue you bring up is important but you can't invalidate Coates's argument by saying, why aren't you also talking about x?

The apartheid against women has to part of any conversation about apartheid. Women’s rights are always on the back burner , never included in the human rights discussion

You’re right but you’re also engaging in whataboutism. Instead of dealing with the issue he’s bringing up, you’re saying what about this other issue.

Are you saying that no one has the right to raise issues about anything then? Because it’s literally impossible to speak out against every injustice in the world, but that doesn’t make the chosen topic any less worthy. Right now he is talking about Anti-Palestinian sentiment and apartheid, a few years ago it was anti-black racism and next year it may be something else. And that’s ok- Also, not all Palestinians are Muslim…

He’s beating us up for ignoring the Palestinians while ignoring women’s rights. And yes! I’m pushing back.

He’s just talking about a particular issue. If you feel he’s ‘beating’ you up, then you have some internal work to do.

I listened to an interview Coates did on Fresh Air. I realized he has his own bias and shortcomings. The reason gender apartheid should be addressed is, Gaza will never be “free” for half of its population. I agree Coates can’t speak on apartheid outside of ethnicity, he probably doesn’t have the ability to see it.

It’s not about me, it’s about apartheid and the ability to look the other way when it comes to women, isn’t just entitled it’s privileged 🙏🏾

He doesn’t need to speak on every issue. He specifically has platformed himself speaking on racial/ethnic divisions so that is what he understands most. He may not be the most credible voice to speak on gender inequality; there are so many other women and queer people that are more adept to speak on that. What purpose does mentioning gender apartheid have in this PARTICULAR conversation (whereby all genders are being oppressed in Gaza)?

As a radical feminist I agree that we need to urgently attend to gender oppression, but I don’t see how that means that we stay silent on the question of Palestine. An entire population may be removed if the war continues. And it is a war that American taxpayers are funding. So the profound silence in American media and public discourse requires that someone speak up to help us reframe the conversation. Also, all Palestinians are not Muslim. There are Christian Palestinians as well as agnostic.

Your attempt to discredit me rich, no acknowledgment of Coates oversight expected. If he wants credibility on apartheid then he should discuss, and write about it as it exists today.

I find your entitlement fascinating in thinking that because someone isn’t speaking about an issue that YOU specifically resonate with, their viewpoint is worthless. I hope you apply this same standard to everyone, and everything in life ✌🏾
